"Banging on a 2900"
Work Session Status Week Ending 06/15/2013
June 17, 2013
Temperatures here in ABQ are heating up. The Wednesday work session ended at noon. Saturday we closed down around 2 pm.
Both air break reservoir tanks have now been hydro tested. They have also been gridded for possible telltale hole drilling.
One tank was prepped for paint.
Taping off the metal parts in the cab continued. Wood painting should begin next week. All the slotted screw heads were
all turned to the same direction.
More insulation sheet metal covers were fabricated and installed to check for proper fit. They await painting. Templates
are being made for the areas behind the steam cylinders.
All the small flexible staybolt plugs have been removed from the engineer’s side. The sleeves can now be thread chased.
The crew will move to the fireman’s side next week. We received the final shipment of staybolt plugs from Strasburg this week.
More air brake piping was painted and installed on the engineer’s side. One such pipe proved to be a bit troublesome.
The reverse gear had to be removed from its mounting plate in order to install the pipe.
Various other frame parts and piping are being cleaned and painted.
Research is ongoing regarding the timing gear reach rod bearings and available alternatives.
Preparations and tools were packed up for a trip to Pueblo, CO. Our crew will be borrowing some parts from ATSF 2912 to
be used as templates in order to fabricate those that were stolen last year.
Another hot week folks so again, if it’s too hot to work, we’ll work through lunch and then shut down. Wednesday is forecast
to be another hot one. Not sure about Saturday yet but forecast shows high 90’s.
